Oh, save us from celebs who save us

Oh, save us from celebs who save us

By ANDREA PEYSER (NY POST)

What comes next after a dame achieves every one of her fantasies -- international star dom, much-younger boyfriends, skinny thighs?

For Madonna, next on the to-do is saving the world. Trouble is, sometimes the globe resists the most fabulous efforts at salvation.

In 2006, Madonna, bereft from advancing years and infertility, traipsed like a savior to the impoverished African nation of Malawi. Another gal might have bought a trinket. Or taken a hush-hush lover.

Instead, Madonna scooped up a live baby from his natural father, breaking every adoption law. As payment to the country over which she trampled, she made a promise.

Madonna wanted to realize her long-held fetish to serve as the Kabbalistic version of Mother Teresa. Forming Raising Malawi, she hit up rich pals, like Gwyneth Paltrow, for money to build an exclusive, expensive -- and ridiculous -- school for girls.

That was then.

Now, every penny raised, $3.8 million, has vanished -- poof!.....

Waiting for Summer to come back

Big Payday for Some Hill Staffers

From The Wall Street Journal:

Departing members of the House of Representatives awarded millions of dollars in extra pay to aides as they closed down their offices, according to lawmakers' spending records.

The 96 lawmakers paid their employees $6.7 million, or 31%, more in the fourth quarter of 2010 than they did, on average, in the first three quarters of the year.

That's about twice as much as the 16% increase awarded by lawmakers who returned to the 112th Congress, according to LegiStorm, an organization that tracks congressional salaries.

Islam's Spiritual 'Dear Abby' (DER SPIEGEL)

Qaradawi advocates establishing a "United Muslim Nations" as a contemporary form of the caliphate and the only alternative to the hegemony of the West. He hates Israel and would love to take up arms himself. In one of his sermons, he asked God "to kill the Jewish Zionists, every last one of them."

In January 2009, he said: "Throughout history, Allah has imposed upon the [Jews] people who would punish them for their corruption. The last punishment was carried out by [Adolf] Hitler."

A weapon of mass destruction was found in the U.S.': Shock confession of Customs officer

...from Mail Online:
A port official has admitted that a 'weapon of mass effect' has been found by 'partner agencies' in the U.S., raising major questions over a possible government cover-up.

The disturbing revelation came in an interview with San Diego's assistant port director screened by a television channel in the city.

The Customs and Border Protection Department tried to dampen speculation over his remarks, but doubts remained over whether he had inadvertently revealed a dirty bomb plot to attack the U.S. mainland.

Food and failed Arab states
By Spengler

Even Islamists have to eat. It is unclear whether President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt will survive, or whether his nationalist regime will be replaced by an Islamist, democratic, or authoritarian state. What is certain is that it will be a failed state. Amid the speculation about the shape of Arab politics to come, a handful of observers, for example economist Nourel Roubini, have pointed to the obvious: Wheat prices have almost doubled in the past year.

Egypt is the world's largest wheat importer....continue HERE

Tunisia's lost generation

Tunisia's lost generation
By Spengler

Some years ago, a well-known Middle East analyst briefed a conservative audience at a private seminar in New York City. "A Palestinian state," he said, "might achieve the modest prosperity and political stability of a Tunisia." Tunisia, long a byword for stable secular governance in the Muslim world, isn't Tunisia anymore. We well may see the future of many Muslim countries in a Tunisian mirror: neither secular or authoritarian, nor democratic, nor Islamist, but merely chaotic. The one thing we may say with certainty about the Tunisians is that there won't be very many of them a generation or two from now....continue here
